FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT
2008 is another year of evolution for the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
Among other initiatives, and as the result of significant research into the RAIA ‘brand’, we will embark on a public education campaign to promote the role and
contribution of architects. We will also introduce new visual material to identify the organisation – and a new name.
The background to this initiative is that we decided, in 2005, to evaluate the organisation’s relevance, and how various stakeholders - including government, the
building sector, other associations, and the public – perceived the Institute. We also evaluated what we stood for and what we should be delivering, and sought the
views of many stakeholders in our industry and members.
As part of the process, we examined the RAIA corporate identity and the impact it did, or didn’t have with members and the broader marketplace.
After conducting significant market research and analysis it was clear from the findings that, among other things, there was a real call for the Institute to undertake
a targeted educative campaign about the benefits of using an architect. The strongest message, overall, was that we needed the communities we serve to have a much
greater understanding of the value of our profession.
The National Council developed with senior staff and expert advisors a strategy for the public education campaign. At the same time the current corporate identity was
reassessed and options for a new corporate identity reviewed. The outcome was to commission Emery Studio to design a new suite of corporate identity materials for the
Institute.

FROM THE CEO
With the Critical Visions national architecture conference opening tomorrow, and the RAIA Awards program now well underway around the country, I take this
opportunity to acknowledge the corporate partners whose support makes our outstanding flagship events, and more, possible.
I am delighted to announce that BlueScope Steel will return for another year as the RAIA’s principal corporate partner. Across a partnership spanning more than 20 years,
Bluescope continues to make a profound contribution to the culture of architecture by supporting programs for professional development, and which arouse interest from
the public and inspire the next generation of architects.
Among the many important architectural endeavors supported by BlueScope are the National Architecture Conference; the National Awards Program (incorporating Chapter award
programs); and, the Gold Medal Tour.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome Autodesk as a new supporting corporate partner and which is also supporting the National Architecture Conference and the Awards
programs, as well as the Neville Quarry Architectural Education Prize and Archivision. Since 1982, Autodesk has ushered in state-of-the-art 2D and 3D technologies that
allow architects visualise, simulate, and analyse the real-world performance of their ideas early in the design process.
These latest partnership developments fulfill our complement of six corporate partners for 2008 (Fielders remains as the major corporate partner and Lockwood, Dulux and
Virgin Atlantic are the three other supporting corporate partners). I encourage you to read more detailed information about the members of our partnership community, and
the programs they support, at Corporate Partners.
Best Wishes,
David Parken

Memo: would you miss it?
The RAIA is reviewing its member publications, including Memo. This publication is a broadsheet newsletter inserted
into every member’s copy of Architecture Australia. The publications review team will consider your feedback on future directions for Memo. Would you miss
it? One possibility is to integrate articles that would once have appeared in Memo into this National Enews. But perhaps you think Enews is already too big?
